Artist Statement

The Fragmented Series plays with the perception of the black body. These pieces relate to the current political turbulence of how black bodies are devalued, targeted, yet exploited within our popular culture. I want the viewer to experience a deeper connection to the figures by seeing themselves reflected in the mirrors which represent the hair; a known characteristic that holds historical power within the black community. I feel this adds a humanity that is often taken away from black bodies.

While some of the figures are painted with oil glazing so that the texture of the wooden canvas comes through, others are painted opaquely.  The light glazing communicates the organic and natural tone of black bodies; they are a part of our world, yet the transparency emphasizes the disappearances of these bodies regarding civil rights and representation. The figures painted opaquely however communicate a known presence they have achieved within popular culture yet is their opaqueness clearly being seen regarding how they want to be seen?

More paintings of this series will be added soon!
